Foundation first

Without a degree, language and financing, many points don't help.

Additional points

The points system

Which points officially count?

The points system only applies if you cannot provide proof of a German qualification or full recognition of your foreign qualifications.

Option 1 · Without points system

German qualification or full recognition in Germany

Then you count as a specialist. The points system is not necessary, financing is still mandatory.

Minimum points for the opportunity card Points from different categories are added together. What is important, however, is that the 6 points do not replace the basic requirements. Formal qualifications, A1 German or B2 English and a secure livelihood must also be plausibly proven.

What is allowed

What the opportunity card allows – and what it doesn’t

The Opportunity Card is more flexible than the job search visa. It allows trial work, part-time work and a longer stay – but not permanent full-time employment without changing your residence permit.

01 What is allowed and forbidden

Work, trial work and limitations of the title

Comparison: Job search visa § 20

What is allowed

  • Job search – Core purpose of the opportunity card
  • Trial work up to 2 weeks per employer – to get to know each other
  • Part-time employment up to a total of 20 hours per week – to cover part of living expenses during the search
  • Networking, interviews, application processes without restrictions
  • Stay up to 12 months, extendable for another 2 years if job is in sight
  • Family members can tighten under certain conditions

What is not allowed

  • Not a full-time job in a qualification-related profession without changing to a work visa or Blue Card
  • No permanent use - after the job fund, the residence permit must be changed
  • No self-employed visa – Section 21 of the Residence Act applies to setting up a business

Extension after 12 months

The opportunity card can be extended for up to 2 years if there is a job offer or concrete negotiations can be proven. An extension is not possible without a job offer or a concrete status of negotiations.

The 20-hour part-time job does not replace a permanent work permit. Anyone who finds qualified employment should clarify the appropriate residence permit with the immigration authorities before starting work.

Requirements & documents

What the embassy requires for the opportunity card

In addition to the 6 points, the embassy needs proof of qualifications, Financing and language skills. Complete documentation is crucial – the points system does not replace any evidence.

After the job find

As soon as there is a job offer, the residence permit changes at the immigration authorities. Work may only begin after the new title has been granted.
