B2 German course.
The key to
Studies & professional career.

B2 is the threshold fluid communication in studies and work. Many universities accept B2 as proof of admission for certain courses, and for professional recognition (e.g. in nursing) B2 is often mandatory. Anyone who starts B2 without a clear plan will invest months - perhaps in the wrong certificate.

Basics

What B2 means – and who absolutely needs it.

B2 is the first stage of the independent and fluent use of language. You can understand complex texts and express yourself spontaneously and in detail.

01 What you can do on B2

Complex texts, discussions, clear arguments – without effort

After GER B2 you can:

  • complex texts understand concrete and abstract topics (specialist articles, reports, literary texts)
  • yourself spontaneous and fluid Communicate with native speakers without anyone having to make an effort
  • write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of topics (report, summary, formal letter)
  • present your own points of view, weigh up the advantages and disadvantages, critically question other opinions

For whom is B2 mandatory or strongly recommended?

  • Studying at a German university (sometimes an admission requirement, but often C1 required)
  • Skilled worker visa for regulated professions (e.g. nursing, educator) – B2 is often required
  • Professional recognition in the medical field (e.g. nursing staff, physiotherapy)
  • Leadership positions in international companies (expected minimum level)
  • Naturalization (B1 is enough, but B2 does not speed up the process)
B2 is often confused with B1. The difference is significant: B1 allows survival in everyday life, B2 enables active participation in academic and professional discourses. Before starting the course, check whether your goal really requires B2 - or whether B1 is enough.

Exam provider

Goethe, telc, ÖSD, TestDaF – which B2 exam for what?

B2 exams are offered by all major providers. However, TestDaF (TDN 3-4) or Goethe-C1 are often more relevant for university entrance - find out more about them beforehand.

02 Choice of exam

B2 is not the same as B2 – weighted differently depending on the provider

ProviderSpecial featuresrecognition forFee (approx.)
Goethe certificate B2Modular structure (reading, listening, writing, speaking separately). Very high international recognition. Requires solid B2 level. ←Professional recognition, university (not everywhere), residence permit180–250 €
telc German B2Combined written exam. Also available as a “telc B2 profession” for specific professional fields. →Work, recognition, and in some cases university entrance140–200 €
ÖSD certificate B2Very high recognition in Austria and Germany. Modular. Emphasis on communication. ←Work, study (limited), residence160–220 €
TestDaF (TDN 3)了一件Especially for university entrance. TDN 3 is approximately equivalent to B2, but is often considered too low. Most universities want TDN 4 (C1). →University entrance (only with TDN 4, rarely with TDN 3)€195 (worldwide)
For one proper studies At a German university, C1 (TestDaF 4×4 or DSH-2) is usually required. B2 is only sufficient for a few technical colleges or as a language bridge course requirement. Check the admission regulations of your desired university before the course begins.

Preparation

This is how you can pass the B2 exam safely

B2 is the first level in which authentic media (newspapers, podcasts, discussions) play a central role.

05Checklist

Resources & learning strategies for B2

  • Use textbooks: "Sure! B2" (Hueber), "Explorations B2" (Schubert), "New Aspects B2" (Langenscheidt).
  • Authentic materials: German newspapers (Süddeutsche, Zeit, FAZ), news (Tagesschau, Deutschlandfunk), podcasts (“Slow spoken news” for starters, later regular news).
  • Writing training: Write a weekly discussion or summary, proofread by native speakers.
  • Practice speaking: Discussion clubs, debates with tandem partners, giving presentations and being questioned.
  • Exam simulation: Carry out several model exams under time pressure - practice time management, especially for the writing part.

Common mistakes that lead to failure

  • Vocabulary too close to everyday life – missing abstract and subject-specific terms.
  • Grammar too incorrect - B2 requires a high level of correctness in sentence structure (subordinate clauses, adjectives, prepositions).
  • There is no clear argumentation structure in the writing part (introduction – thesis – arguments – counter-thesis – conclusion).
  • In the discussion about passive role - B2 speaking expects independent expression of opinions and contradiction.

According to B2

What comes after the B2 certificate – transition to C1

B2 is the entry ticket for many professions and study programs. However, C1 is required for regular university admission and demanding academic activities.

06Advanced levels

From C1 to C2 – for studies, science and top positions

levelNeeded forApproximate duration from B2
C1Standard study access at all universities (TestDaF 4×4, DSH-2, Goethe-C1), academic professions, management positions5-8 months intensive
C2Very rarely required (teaching position, highest administrative levels, demanding editorial work)8–12 months (from B2)
telc C1 UniversityAlternative university entrance (in addition to TestDaF/DSH) – accepted at many universities6-9 months from B2
If you want to study, find out early about the university's specific language requirements. Some universities accept B2 + Studienkolleg, others insist on C1. Don't rely on hearsay - check the admission regulations in writing.
