02/04/05 · C1 – Competent use of language

C1 German course.
The hurdle for
Study & Approval.

C1 is the level of competent use of language. It is the standard requirement for studying at German universities (TestDaF 4×4, DSH-2, Goethe-C1, telc C1 Hochschule) as well as for the approval to practice medicine from doctors, pharmacists and other academic medical professions. Without C1, there is no access to many academic and highly qualified pathways.

Basics

What C1 means – and who absolutely needs it.

C1 is the first level of the competent use of language. You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and express yourself spontaneously, fluently and very precisely.

01 What you can do on C1

Complex issues, nuances, implicit meanings – understand and reproduce effortlessly

According to GER C1 you can:

  • understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts (specialist articles, literary works, reports) and grasp implicit meanings
  • Express yourself spontaneously and fluently without having to search for words more often
  • use the language effectively and flexibly in social, professional and academic areas
  • Write clear, structured, detailed texts on complex topics (essay, report, scientific work) - using appropriate stylistic devices and logical thought processes

For whom is C1 mandatory?

  • University entrance (regular studies) at almost all German universities – Proof usually through TestDaF (4×4), DSH-2, Goethe-C1, telc C1 Hochschule
  • Licensed to practice medicine as a doctor, dentist, pharmacist, psychotherapist – C1 is required (Goethe-C1, telc C1 medicine or equivalent)
  • Recognition in the higher healthcare sector (e.g. further training as a specialist)
  • Teaching degree (often C1, sometimes C2)
  • Management positions in German-speaking companies with extensive written communication
C1 is the highest level that is required across the board in academic and professional contexts. C2 is only required in exceptional cases (e.g. studying German, translator, highest administration). Before starting a C1 course, check whether your goal really requires C1 - many are wrong and could start with B2 or a preparatory course.

Exam provider

TestDaF, DSH, Goethe, telc – which C1 exam for what?

TestDaF and DSH are the standards for university entrance. Goethe-C1 and telc C1 Hochschule are also accepted at many universities - but not everywhere.

02 Choice of exam

TestDaF, DSH, Goethe-C1 or telc C1 Hochschule – the differences

ExamSpecial featuresrecognition forCost (approx.)
TestDaF (TDN 4)Standardized testing, at many test centers worldwide. Result in some areas (reading, listening, writing, speaking). Required: TDN 4 in all parts. 4×4 is considered the C1 equivalent.University entrance (almost all universities), doctoral procedure.195 €
DSH-2 (German language test for university entrance)Only taken at German universities. Regionally different focuses. DSH-2 corresponds to C1, DSH-3 corresponds to C2.University entrance (all state universities).100–160 € (including preparation course often more expensive)
Goethe certificate C1Very high international recognition. Is accepted by many universities, but not by all (sometimes only “C1” is not sufficient - then Goethe-C2 or TestDaF is required). Examination fee higher.University entrance (check beforehand!), license to practice medicine, professional recognition.250–350 €
telc German C1 University一件Specially developed for university applicants. Is increasingly accepted at universities, but not yet across the board. Check the university site before applying.University entrance (limited acceptance).180–250 €
The DSH exam can only be taken at German universities, usually after a preparatory language course. TestDaF is available worldwide. Be sure to find out from the admissions office at your desired university which exams are accepted - and whether a certain result (e.g. TestDaF 4×4) is mandatory.

Course types in comparison

The path to C1 is that long and intensive

The jump from B2 to C1 is significantly more demanding than from B1 to B2. Expect at least 6 months of intensive lessons after completing B2.

formatDuration (from B2)Cost (approx.)Advantages/Disadvantages
University preparation course (DSH)1–2 semesters (5–10 months)500–1,500 € (partly free)Optimal preparation for DSH, often associated with university admission, but only for university applicants.
Intensive course (language school, TestDaF-focused)6-9 months1.800–3.000 €Very structured, clear exam preparation, expensive.
Online live course8-12 months1.200–2.400 €Flexible, but very high personal responsibility – less speaking practice.
Individual lessons (academic German)individually50-90 € / unitHighest efficiency, but very expensive.
Many universities offer special preparation courses for DSH and TestDaF, which are often significantly cheaper than commercial schools. In addition, these courses are usually tailored to the specific requirements of the respective university.

Syllabus C1

What you learn on the way to C1 – academic discourse, scientific writing

The C1 material prepares students for the academic and professional use of the German language.

03Content

Vocabulary, grammar, speech for studying, science and academic communication

Vocabulary & subject areas

  • Scientific writing: citation rules, thesis formation, literature research, abstracts
  • Academic discussion: discourse analysis, argumentation strategies, recognizing logical fallacies
  • Intercultural communication in a university context
  • Subject-specific lexis (depending on the subject of study – medicine, law, engineering, business administration, German studies, etc.)
  • Politics and current affairs in more depth with complex newspaper articles and commentaries
  • Interpreting literary texts (short stories, drama excerpts, poems)

Grammar at C1 level (selection)

  • Detailed nominalizations and functional verb structures as stylistic devices for formal texts
  • Subjunctive I and II in indirect speech, quotations and unreal wishes
  • extended participial attributes (the report examined by the commission, the rules to be followed)
  • Adverbial subordinate clauses with different connectors (depending on, insofar as, provided that)
  • Confidently recognize and produce different types of subordinate clauses (causal clauses, final clauses, consecutive clauses, modal clauses, etc.).
  • Express modality with modal verbs, modal adverbs (apparently, apparently, presumably, undoubtedly) and subjective modality
  • Use of tense in scientific texts (present, past, perfect, pluperfect in planned alternation)

Exam format

This is how the C1 exam works – example TestDaF (4×4)

TestDaF is the most widely used C1 exam for university entrance. The exam tests all four skills separately. There is no overall grade, but rather four separate results (TDN 3-5).

04Exam parts

Reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression – 60–70 minutes each.

partDurationContents (TestDaF)
Reading comprehension60 mins3 word tasks: 1) assign short emails/advertisements, 2) scientific text with fill-in-the-blanks, 3) complex specialist article with multiple choice.
Listening comprehensionapprox. 40 minutes3 listening texts: 1) everyday dialogue (telephone call), 2) interview (approx. 5 min.), 3) scientific lecture (approx. 5–6 min.). Mostly played once.
Written expression60 minsWrite a structured text based on a graphic/statistics (approx. 250-300 words) – introduction, description, interpretation, your own opinion.
Oral expressionapprox. 35 minutes7 tasks on the computer: from a simple description of a graphic to the discussion of a thesis with advantages and disadvantages. Recordings will be evaluated later.
The biggest hurdles in the TestDaF are often the listening comprehension part (because of specialist vocabulary and fast speaking speed) and the written expression (because it requires a clear scientific structure). Practice specifically with model tests under time pressure.

Preparation

This is how you master the C1 exam (TestDaF / DSH / Goethe C1) safely

C1 requires targeted training methods – particularly academic vocabulary and formal writing strategies.

05Checklist

Resources & strategies for C1/TestDaF/DSH

  • Prioritize model testing: TestDaF (hueber Verlag), DSH sample exams from universities, Goethe C1 sample exams. A full exam every week under time pressure.
  • Academic vocabulary: Develop topic vocabulary for your field of study (e.g. for medicine: diseases, treatment methods; for business administration: market analysis, accounting). Use a vocabulary trainer with specialist terms.
  • Drill writing: Structured essays on social topics (education, digitalization, migration, climate) - with an introduction, description of graphics, pro/contra arguments, conclusion. Have it corrected by native speakers.
  • Training listening comprehension: Scientific podcasts (“WDR Zeitzeichen”, “Deutschlandfunk – Forschungs aktuell”), lectures on YouTube in your own department.
  • Simulate speaking test: Record tasks at exactly the same time in front of your smartphone and evaluate them yourself (fluency, vocabulary, grammar, task completed).

Common mistakes that lead to failure

  • Inadequate knowledge of the exam format - each exam has specific task types.
  • No clear structure in written expression (“common thread” missing, arguments unsorted).
  • Sentence structure and everyday vocabulary are too simple – academic German is expected for C1.
  • In the oral exam, answers that are too short or monotonous pronunciation - a longer, coherent speech is expected (2-3 minutes per task).
  • Time management in reading comprehension is underestimated - complex texts require quick comprehension of key messages.

According to C1

What comes after the C1 certificate – C2 for specialists

C1 opens up all academic and professional paths. C2 is only required in very specific contexts.

06Advanced levels

C2 – Approaching native speaker level, rarely required

levelNeeded forApproximate duration from C1
C2Studies in German (teaching qualification), translator/interpreter, highest administrative levels, some headmaster positions, journalistic editorial teams6-12 months
Goethe-C2 (Great German Language Diploma)Required in individual cases for very demanding academic positions; highest international recognitionspecial preparation required
For 99% of students and professionals, C1 is the final hurdle. A C2 course is only worthwhile if you have to explicitly prove that you have a native language level (e.g. for studying German to become a teacher or for a career as a translator). Make sure your goal requires C2 - otherwise time is better spent on expertise.
