Target group

Anyone who needs telc B2 – nursing staff, skilled workers, university applicants

B2 is the first level of advanced language use. Without B2, access to many academic careers remains closed.

01 Professional & Academic Requirements

Nursing, educators, commercial professions, university studies

Typical areas of application for telc B2:

  • Nursing professionals (recognition process) – In many federal states, B2 is required for full professional recognition.
  • Educators/social educators – B2 is often the minimum standard for recognition.
  • Commercial professions with customer contact – Banks, insurance companies, hotels.
  • Studying at universities of applied sciences (FH) – some universities of applied sciences accept B2 as proof of admission (for certain subjects).
  • Preparation for C1 (e.g. for university studies) – B2 is an intermediate step on the way to C1.
  • Proof of language skills for certain residence permits (e.g. EU Blue Card – not legal, but desired by employers).
B2 is not a legal requirement for a settlement permit or naturalization (where B1 is sufficient). However, for most academic paths, C1 (TestDaF 4×4 or DSH-2) is the goal - B2 is a helpful intermediate step, but not a final goal.

Exam format

This is how telc B2 works – more complex texts, more sophisticated communication

The structure is similar to telc B1, but the texts are significantly longer and more abstract, the grammar includes passive, subjunctive I and complex subordinate clauses.

02 Exam structure

Reading & language, listening, writing, speaking – with more demanding tasks

partDuration (telc B2)ContentPassing limit
Reading & Language (combined)90 minsComplex texts (newspaper articles, specialist texts, graphics), language modules with sophisticated grammar (nominalization, subjunctive I, passive variants).60% in the overall written part
Listenapprox. 35 minutesLonger news articles, interviews with experts, discussions - mostly played once.
Write60 minsWrite a formal letter or discussion (pro/con) of approximately 180-200 words.
Speaking (oral)approx. 15-20 minutes per couple1. Short lecture on a given topic (with preparation time), 2. Discussion about a social problem (e.g. digitalization, climate) with the partner.60% of oral points
The biggest hurdle in telc B2 is the writing part: The discussion requires a clear structure, differentiated arguments and correct use of the subjunctive I (indirect speech) and the passive. Practice writing pro/con essays specifically.

Costs & dates

Examination fees and registration deadlines

B2 exams are more expensive than B1, but still cheaper than Goethe B2. The density of appointments is lower - plan early.

03 Fees & Booking

150-220 €, repeat fees approx. 100-150 € (in writing)

  • Regular exam fee: 150-220 € (community colleges are cheaper, private schools are more expensive).
  • Repetition in writing: approx. 90-120 €.
  • Repetition verbally: approx. 50-80 €.
  • Preparation course (optional, 4–6 months): 800–1.500 €.

Dates: telc B2 is often only offered 4-6 times per year at an examination center. Registration deadline: 6-8 weeks before the appointment. Check with the exam center early.

Since B2 courses and exams are less in demand than B1, you may have to accept long journeys. Use the center search on telc.net and also plan an alternative appointment.

Provider comparison

telc B2 vs. Goethe B2 – differences and decision support

Both exams test B2 level, but differ in their structure and how they are perceived by employers.

For professional recognition in the nursing sector, telc B2 is the standard (telc B2 is often explicitly required). Both are equivalent for general applications. Find out from your responsible body (e.g. nursing chamber) whether telc B2 is accepted - this is almost always the case.

Preparation

This is how you prepare optimally for telc B2

B2 requires targeted training in specialist vocabulary, complex sentence structures and the ability to discuss abstract topics.

04 Materials & Strategies

Textbooks, model tests, authentic media

Official materials

  • Model test: telc.net offers a complete B2 model test as a PDF with audio.
  • Textbooks: "Successful to telc German B2" (Klett), "Exam training telc B2" (Cornelsen), "Sicher! B2" (Hueber) - the latter is for general B2, not specifically for telc, but covers the material.

Advanced strategies

  • Read: Daily reading of newspapers (FAZ, SZ, Zeit) and specialist magazines in order to internalize complex sentence structures.
  • Write: Write a weekly discussion on current topics and have it proofread by a native speaker.
  • Listen: Listen to podcasts (“Deutschlandfunk – background”, “SWR2 Wissen”) and news at a normal speaking pace.
  • Speaking: Debates with tandem partners on controversial topics (e.g. “Should bans combat climate change?”).
The most common weakness in B2 is writing: insufficient structure, lack of pro/con argument and lack of mastery of the subjunctive I (indirect speech). Be sure to use phrases like “according to the author/study”, “it can be assumed that”.

According to B2

What comes after telc B2 – C1 for university studies and academic careers

B2 opens many doors, but C1 is usually required for regular studies at a university (not a university of applied sciences) (TestDaF 4×4, DSH-2, telc C1 Hochschule).

05 Further examinations

telc C1 University, TestDaF, Goethe-C1, DSH

  • telc C1 University – especially for university applicants, is being accepted by more and more universities (but not across the board).
  • TestDaF (TDN 4 in all parts) – the standard for all German universities.
  • Goethe-C1 – is only accepted by a few universities, but is fully valid for general careers.
  • DSH-2 – the German counterpart, can only be taken at universities in Germany.

If you definitely want to study, plan specific preparation for TestDaF or DSH after B2 (approx. 4-8 additional months).

Without a C1 (or equivalent), regular university studies in Germany are not possible. B2 is only sufficient for universities of applied sciences with special programs or as a language bridge course requirement. Don't rely on exceptions.
