Target group

Who needs telc German A2 – and for whom it is the wrong choice.

A2 is an intermediate step. Most residence permits require B1 straight away, but some authorities accept A2 as the first proof.

01 When is A2 required?

Extension of stay, simple employment, pre-integration

Typical cases for telc A2:

  • Extension of the residence permit in certain individual cases (e.g. when a spouse joins in after two years without B1).
  • Simple professional activities without customer contact (e.g. cleaner, warehouse assistant) – not required by law, but desired by employers.
  • Evidence of certain career preparation measures the Federal Employment Agency.
  • Orientation after integration course (if the DTZ has only achieved A2, A2 is certified - but the goal is B1).

Important note: For most permanent residence permits (settlement permit, naturalization). B1 needed. If you're aiming for A2, ask yourself: Do you really need it? Or can you start directly with B1 and save time?

The legal requirements for residence permits almost always refer to B1. A2 is rarely a legal hurdle - it is usually a self-imposed goal or an employer requirement. Before registering, check whether A2 is really necessary.

telc B1 and DTZ – the most important certificates
