German for
Study.
What level
do you need?

There is no admission to study without sufficient knowledge of German. Almost all universities require it C1 level – proven by TestDaF (4×4), DSH-2 or equivalent certificates. Choosing the wrong language course or certificate will cost you an entire semester.

The required level

C1 is the standard – exceptions prove the rule

Studying at a German university requires that you be able to follow lectures, read specialist texts, write term papers and take exams. At least C1 is required for this.

01 C1 – the golden hurdle

What you need to be able to do at C1 – and what the universities test

  • Understanding lectures: Even with fast speaking speed, technical vocabulary and dialect coloring.
  • Analyze scientific texts: Recognizing theses, argumentation structures and implicit statements.
  • Writing homework and exams: Formulate structured, error-free texts using specialist terminology.
  • Give presentations & lead discussions: Clearly represent your own points of view and respond to counter-arguments.

B2 is only sufficient in exceptional cases:

  • Universities of Applied Sciences (FHs) accept B2 for some practice-oriented degree programs (e.g. business, engineering at universities of applied sciences).
  • Some universities offer conditional admission: you have to prove C1 within 1-2 semesters.
  • Preparatory colleges usually require B2 for admission, after which C1 is achieved as part of the FSP.
Don't rely on exceptions. For most bachelor's and master's degree programs, C1 is the hard requirement. Start preparing for TestDaF or DSH early.

Recognized exams

TestDaF, DSH, Goethe-C1, telc C1 HS – what is accepted

Not every C1 certificate is recognized by every university. The following table shows realistic acceptance.

02 Recognition

The most important tests in comparison

ExamRequired resultRecognition at universities
TestDaF4×4 (TDN 4 in all parts)Comprehensively at all universities and colleges
DSHDSH-2 or DSH-3Comprehensive (only available in Germany)
Goethe certificate C1"passed" (is rarely accepted)Only at a few universities, usually not sufficient
telc German C1 University“passed” (sometimes with a grade)Partially accepted (check beforehand!)
ÖSD C1“passed”一道Rather rarely accepted
The safest and most widely used certificates are TestDaF (4×4) and DSH-2. If you live abroad, TestDaF is the first choice. If you are already in Germany, you can take the DSH at the university - often cheaper and tailored to the university.

TestDaF vs. DSH

What's the difference - and which test is easier?

Both exams test academic German, but the structure, assessment and availability differ greatly.

criterionTestDaFDSH
AvailabilityMany test centers worldwideOnly at German universities (on site)
Exam formatStandardized, digital, identical worldwideVaries slightly from university to university
RatingTDN 3-5 for each partDSH-1, DSH-2, DSH-3 (overall grade)
Difficulty (subjective)Listening comprehension demanding (topic often academic)Grammar section is more detailed, but mostly more well-known topics
Costs195 € (fixed)100–160 € (plus preparation course if necessary)
Whoever has the choice: TestDaF is easier to plan and available worldwide. DSH is often cheaper and the exam content is tailored to the respective university - which can be an advantage for local applicants.

Preparation strategy

From B2 to C1 – how to obtain your university entrance qualification

The jump from B2 to C1 is the most demanding in the entire GER system. It requires targeted training in academic German.

03 Learning strategies

How to optimally prepare for TestDaF/DSH

Official preparation materials

  • TestDaF: Free model tests on testdaf.de, official app “TestDaF-Portal”.
  • DSH: Sample exams on the university websites (e.g. University of Heidelberg, TU Dresden).
  • Textbooks: “With success to the TestDaF” (Klett), “TestDaF exam training” (Cornelsen), “DSH & study preparation” (Hueber).

Use authentic sources

  • Listen to lectures: YouTube channels from universities (“Uni Heidelberg Lectures”, “LMU Podcasts”).
  • Read trade magazines: Spectrum of science, technology review, scientific articles on your own subject.
  • Academic discussions: Lead debates about controversial topics (e.g. “Should there be tuition fees?”).

Schedule

  • 3-4 months before the exam: Study 10-15 hours per week, focus on writing & listening comprehension.
  • 6-8 weeks before: Simulate a complete test every week under time pressure.
  • The last week: Repetition of speech, exam strategies, relaxation.
Without a structured preparation course (online or on site), TestDaF/DSH is almost impossible to pass. Many language schools offer special TestDaF preparation courses (4–8 weeks, €300–800). Invest here – it’s worth it.

Alternative: preparatory college

If your school leaving certificate is not recognized or your language skills are not yet sufficient

The preparatory college is a one-year preparation for studying. It combines language courses (up to C1) with professional preparation (e.g. mathematics, physics, economics).

04 preparatory college

Requirements, duration, costs

  • Requirement: University entrance qualification in your home country, but not directly sufficient for Germany; B2 is often required for admission.
  • Duration: 2 semesters (1 year) intensive.
  • Conclusion: Assessment test (FSP). If you pass, you will be eligible to study any subject at a German university (equivalent to Abitur).
  • Costs: Usually low semester fees (€200–500 per semester) plus living expenses.

Advantages: Systematic preparation, linguistic and technical input, contacts with fellow students and the university.

A preparatory course is not a sign of weakness, but rather a planned path. Around 30% of all international students in Germany complete a preparatory course. If your language skills are still at B2, the Studienkolleg is the wiser choice instead of applying directly to the university and being rejected.

Timeline

When you should start language preparation

The application deadlines for the winter semester usually end on July 15th. Your language test must then be available - plan 12-18 months in advance.

05 Scheduling

From A2 to TestDaF in 12 months – realistic?

  • 12 months before the start of the application: Have the current level realistically assessed.
  • 9–10 months before: Start of an intensive language course (B2/C1).
  • 6 months before the deadline: First TestDaF appointment (possible to repeat if necessary).
  • 4 months before the deadline: If necessary, use a second exam date (TestDaF dates: February, April, June, July, September, November).
  • 2 months before the deadline: Submit application documents - the language certificate must be enclosed.
TestDaF results are available approximately 4-6 weeks after the exam. Anyone who takes the exam in June often only receives the certificate at the beginning of August - after July 15th. Be sure to plan an exam date in April or earlier to be sure about your winter semester application.

After passing the exam

What comes after TestDaF or DSH – the application and the studies

With a valid language certificate (TestDaF 4×4 or DSH-2) you can apply via uni-assist or directly to the university.

06 Next steps

Application, visa, registration

  • Application: Frontiers: Hochschulstart.de for subjects with restricted admissions, uni-assist for many universities, or the university's direct application portal.
  • Visa: Apply for a study visa upon admission - plan waiting times of 4-12 weeks.
  • Enrollment: Once admitted, adhere to the enrollment deadline (often only 2-3 weeks).
  • Start studying: Even with C1, the first semester will be challenging - take advantage of the university's tutorials and language courses.
Even after passing the language test, you should practice your active participation in seminars. Many international students underestimate the oral requirement. Before studying, attend an “Academic German” course at the university.
